16 Kilometers north west from Jhelum Town lies the great Fort of Rohtas.
After expelling Humayun in 1542, the Emperor Sher Shah Suri found it
desirable to take measures against the return of Mughals and against their
friends the Gakkhars. He thus built a great Fort to be named after the
Fort of Rohtas in Bengal, the scene of a previous victory. It was
completed in the year 1548.A.D. The forest has an imposing structure with
walls that are 30 feet thick and 30 to 50 feet high. There are 68 towers
and 12 gateways and the walls are regularly pierced for musketry, archery
and
cannons.
There
is an interesting story about the building of the Fort. In the beginning
the Gakkhars did not cooperate in its construction, but the builders very
intelligently handled the Gakkhars by paying one Ashrafi per stone. The
construction work of the fort was completed in time. In the modern age
though the Fort has lost its strategic significance, yet it serves a
tourist spot, many from within the country and abroad visit the Fort to
witness its glory.
Another
important place is Dhamiak about six miles north of Sohawa Railway
Station. The present village is built on the old site, and consequently
nothing is left of the old buildings, except the materials used for the
construction of many of the present houses, like small sized bricks. It is
almost certain that Dhamiak was the scene of the assassination of Muhammad
Bin Sam, better known as Muhammad Ghouri, one of the first Sultans of
Delhi (1193-1205 A.D.). He was slain at the hands of Gakkhars in the
center of his camp, while marching from Lahore to Ghazni. His mausoleum
has been built at this spot recently due to the personal efforts of
Dr.A.Q.Khan.
Nandna
Fort is situated on a hilltop near Baghanwala some 22 Kilometers East of
Pind Dadan khan. It first finds a mention in the time of Mehmood Ghaznavi
who in 1008 A.D.conquered it.
Legend
has that Al-Beruni stayed at Nandna for sometime and it is here that he
calculated the circumference of earth.
The
Mangla Dam was constructed during the year 1964 under the Indus Basin
Pact. It is situated at a distance of about 20 Kilometers towards the
North East of Jhelum.
A
substantial area of Jhelum District was acquired for the construction of
Dam and its reservoir. Its water storage capacity is 5.3644 Million acre
feet.
It has not only augmented the electricity production but also irrigates a
substantial area of Gujrat and Sargodha Districts through the various
canals constructed under the above mentioned pact. The water reservoir and
the museum housed in a small fort serve as a recreational spot for the
locals.
The
Lehri Natural Park is located in Jindi-Lehri Reserved Forests on an area
of 17,513 acres of Jhelum and Sohawa Tehsil of Jhelum District. The
development work is in progress over an area of 1500 acres. The estimated
cost of the project was 15.478 millions in 1988-89. The phase II of the
scheme is under process. The project aims not only at improving forests
but also provides recreational facilities to the general public.

With the
passage of time the salt mines changed hands from Mughals to Sikhs and
then to British. At the present moment, these are the property of Pakistan
Mineral Development Corporation. There are seven seams of salt varying in
thickness from a few feet to about hundred feet and the mining method is
known as Room & Pillar method.
VILLAGE OF GANDER

is located in the Sub-Division Pind Dadan Khan, close to
Jalalpur Sharif, is the small village of Gander which, according to some
archaeologists, is derived from the word Alexander. It is said that the
